Glaucoma is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged, usually due to high eye pressure in the eye. There are many causes of glaucoma, but the most common are slowly progressive open angle glaucoma and the more painful and rapid narrow angle glaucoma. If left untreated, glaucoma can cause a patient to lose vision. Patients usually do not know they have glaucoma until they have already lost some vision. Unfortunately, the optic nerve damage is irreversible and the only treatments available involve lowering the pressure inside the eye, either with eye drops, laser, or with a surgical procedure. If you have narrow angles and are at risk of narrow angle glaucoma, you may need a small laser procedure called a laser peripheral iridotomy to protect your eyes from an angle-closure glaucoma attack. Dr. Jeremy Cotliar and Dr. Rajendra Bansal are glaucoma specialists, specializing in glaucoma management and surgery, but all of our providers thoroughly check each patient for glaucoma. Glaucoma runs in families, so if a family member has glaucoma, it is important for the rest of the family to be screened.
